چکیده

JUNE 2003 AMERICAN METEOROLOGICAL SOCIETY | P ositive lightning discharges (flashes) are defined as those effectively transporting a positive charge from a cloud to the earth. It is thought that less than 10% of global cloud-to-ground lightning is positive (e.g., Uman 1987). Lightning discharges (flashes) that transfer to ground both positive and negative charges are termed bipolar lightning discharges. Positive lightning discharges have recently attracted considerable attention for the following reasons:

Positive and Bipolar Lightning Discharges: a Review

Characteristics of lightning discharges that transport either positive charge or both negative and positive charges to ground are reviewed. Different types of positive and bipolar discharges are discussed.

Observations of narrow bipolar events reveal how lightning is initiated in thunderstorms

A long-standing but fundamental question in lightning studies concerns how lightning is initiated inside storms, given the absence of physical conductors. The issue has revolved around the question of whether the discharges are initiated solely by conventional dielectric breakdown or involve relativistic runaway electron processes. Here we report observations of a relatively unknown type of dis...

A GPS-based Three-Dimensional Lightning Mapping System: Initial Observations in Central New Mexico

A GPS-based system has been developed that accurately locates the sources of VHF radiation from lightning discharges in three spatial dimensions and time. The observations are found to re ect the basic charge structure of electri ed storms. Observations have also been obtained of a distinct type of energetic discharge referred to as positive bipolar breakdown, recently identi ed as the source o...

Pulse trains that are characteristic of preliminary breakdown in cloud-to-ground lightning but are not followed by return stroke pulses

[1] In this study, we identify and examine electric field pulse trains that are characteristic of preliminary breakdown in negative cloud-to-ground discharges but are not followed by return stroke waveforms. We assume that such trains are manifestations of the initiation of downward negative stepped leaders that fail to propagate all the way to the ground and refer to these events as ‘‘attempte...

Letter to the Editor Intense oceanic lightning

The electrodynamic properties of intense oceanic lightning discharges are compared to intense continental lightning discharges. Particularly intense negative lightning discharges with absolute charge moments > 2 kC·km occur more often over the oceans than over the continents during April 1998. Intense continental lightning discharges, with negative and positive polarity, and intense positive oc...
